For independent funeral homes

The family walks out with the funeral handled. Then the paperwork starts.

Afterward Care is a free tool you offer every family you serve. It tells them whether they can skip probate in their state, gives them a short plan for the weeks ahead, and writes the notification letters they would otherwise call you about. Your name is on all of it. We never touch the funeral.

No contract. No setup fee. Nothing per family.

What your staff is already doing for free

Three weeks after the service, the daughter calls. Social Security. The bank. The car title. Does she need a lawyer for this? Your staff is kind about it every time, and it is still an hour out of somebody's day.

It answers those calls

Afterward Care gives her a real answer at eleven at night, with your name at the top of the page — the probate question, the order to do things in, and the letters themselves.

Some families can skip probate entirely

Most states have a simplified process for smaller estates. Families who qualify often never find out and hire an attorney anyway. The screener asks five questions and tells them where they likely stand in their state.

Twelve letters, ready to send

Social Security, the three credit bureaus, the bank, credit cards, life insurance, the employer, the retirement plan, utilities, the mortgage, home and auto, subscriptions. The family enters their details once.

Branded to you, not to us

Your name is in the header, on every letter, and at the close. A family using this does not learn a software company's name. They learn yours.

It stays out of your lane on purpose

No cremation quotes, no burial planning, no preneed pitch, no obituaries, no merchandise. Post-funeral estate paperwork and nothing else. There is no version of this where we start selling to your families behind you.

A reason to call back in six weeks

How did the Social Security letter go — did you hear back yet? That is a different conversation than checking in, and it is the one that ends in a review and a referral.

How it works

1

We put your name on it

You send us your funeral home's name. We send back a link. Opening it shows the family a version that says it is offered with care by you. Nothing to install, no login, no integration with your case management software.

2

You hand it to the family

Most homes put the link on the aftercare page of the folder families already leave with, or text it. Some print a half-sheet with a QR code. It takes one sentence: when you're ready for the paperwork side, this walks you through it, and it's free from us.

3

The family uses it on their own time

No signup, no account, no email required. Two hours at the kitchen table instead of six weeks of not knowing where to start.

4

You hear about it from them

We don't send you a dashboard to check. What you get is the call you were already going to get, going differently.

What it costs

Flat monthly, by your call volume. Unlimited families. Nothing per family, because you should never have to decide whether a family is worth enrolling.

113 calls a year is the average for an NFDA member firm. At that volume, Essential works out to less per family than a card program — and it is the part families actually call you about.

Fair questions

We already use Aftercare.com. Is this the same thing?
No, and it does not replace them. Aftercare.com sends grief cards and check-in texts. That is emotional follow-up and it is good at it. This is the paperwork side: the probate question, the notification letters, the estate steps. A family can get a sympathy card on Tuesday and still have no idea what to do about their father's bank account on Wednesday. If you keep one, keep both. They do different jobs.
Is this legal advice? I'm not putting my name on something that gets a family in trouble.
It is not, and it says so plainly on every screen. Afterward Care is a self-help document preparation and organizing tool. It does not represent anyone, does not interpret a will, does not tell a family what the law requires of them, and does not review what they write. The letters are templates the family fills in and sends themselves, the way a form book works. Where the situation calls for a lawyer, it says to get a lawyer. We are deliberately conservative here, because your name sits next to ours on every page.
Our families are older. They're not tech people.
Fair, and it is the thing we designed hardest around. There is no account, no password, and no app to download. It is one link that opens like a web page, works on a phone, and asks plain questions in large type. In practice the person using it is usually the adult child who is already handling everything — the same person calling your office. And if a family never opens it, you have lost nothing.
How much work is this for my staff?
One sentence and one link. There is nothing to log into, no data to enter, no cases to open, no reports to run, and no training session. You are not administering a program. If your staff has to do more than mention it and hand it over, I built it wrong.
What if a family actually needs a real attorney?
Then they need one, and the tool tells them so. Contested wills, a family business, property in more than one state, an estate clearly over the simplified threshold, relatives who are not getting along, anything past basic taxes. Those get pointed toward a probate attorney, not walked through a form. Sending a family to a lawyer they genuinely needed is a good outcome for you. Letting a family spend four thousand dollars on a lawyer for an estate that qualified for the small-estate process is not.
How is this different from the free ones — Sunset, EverSettled, Everything After?
Mostly in who pays and what happens to the family afterward. Sunset is free to you and pays you a commission, and it earns its money on the interest from estate funds it holds. EverSettled is free to you and pays a referral commission, and the family is billed fifteen hundred dollars out of the estate. Those are real companies doing real work, and in both cases the family becomes somebody else's customer after you hand them over. Afterward Care charges you and charges the family nothing, ever, so there is nothing waiting behind the free part. That is a worse business model on paper. It is the one I want, because it means I am never selling to your families and you are never the one who introduced them to a bill.
Why should I trust a company I've never heard of?
You should not, yet. I am one person who built this, not a sales rep, and when you call the number you get me. So use it yourself first. Open the link with your funeral home's name on it and walk through it as if you were a family you served last month. If it is not something you would be comfortable handing them, do not buy it. Month to month, cancel by email, no contract to get out of. The only thing I am asking for up front is twenty minutes and an honest opinion.
What happens to the family's information?
Today, nothing leaves their device. The answers and the letter details are stored in the family's own browser, not on a server — there is no account and no database of families. If they close the tab on their own computer, it is still there when they come back; if they clear their browser, it is gone. When we add the option to mail letters for a family, that step will require collecting a name and address, and we will say so plainly at that point.

Look at it before you decide anything

I will set up a version with your funeral home's name on it and send you the link. No demo call required, no card, nothing to install. Open it and click through it as if you were the daughter who just got home from the service, and see whether it is something you would be proud to hand a family. If it is, we can talk about the number. If it is not, tell me what is wrong with it and I will take that seriously. Either way you will know in fifteen minutes.
