Terms of use

Last updated 28 August 2026

The most important thing on this page: Afterward Care is not a law firm, and nothing here is legal advice. We do not represent you, we are not your attorney, and using this site does not create an attorney-client relationship.

This is a self-help tool. It helps you organize what needs doing and prepare letters that you review, sign, and send.

What this tool does

Afterward Care gives you general information about settling an estate, a plan based on the answers you provide, and letter templates you fill in yourself. Every letter is written from you, signed by you, and sent by you.

What it does not do

Estate rules differ by state and county, they change, and the same rule can apply differently to two families. Nothing here is tailored to your specific circumstances, no matter how closely it may seem to match them.

When you should get a lawyer

Some situations genuinely need a professional, and we would rather tell you so. Talk to a probate attorney if the will is contested or unclear, if relatives disagree, if the estate owns a business, if there is property in more than one state, if the estate may owe estate tax, if there are more debts than assets, or if anything about the situation feels beyond a form.

Your responsibility

You are responsible for checking that the information you enter is accurate, for reading anything before you sign or send it, and for meeting any deadline that applies to you. Please confirm requirements and dates with the probate court in the county where the person lived, or with an attorney.

Acceptable use

Use this tool for handling the affairs of someone who has died, or your own planning. Do not use it to impersonate anyone, to obtain information you are not entitled to, or for any unlawful purpose. Do not attempt to disrupt, scrape, or misuse the site.

No warranty

The site is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. We work hard to keep the information accurate and current, but we cannot guarantee that everything is correct, complete, or applicable to your situation, and we do not guarantee that the site will always be available.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Afterward Care and its owner are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the site, including any missed deadline, rejected filing, or financial loss. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us, which for most people is nothing.

Funeral homes and other partners

A funeral home's name may appear on this tool because they offer it to the families they serve. That branding does not make them responsible for the tool, and it does not mean they are giving you legal advice either. Questions about the funeral itself belong with them; questions about this tool belong with us.

Changes

We may update these terms. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the site means you accept the current version.

About this page. This is a plain-English starting draft written to be honest and readable, not a document prepared by a lawyer. It should be reviewed by a licensed attorney, and the governing-law and business-entity details completed, before it is relied upon.
